Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov will go down as one of the best fights that never happened. Despite matching the two lightweights up on multiple occasions the UFC saw the bout slip through its grasps each and every time. Injuries, weight cuts and COVID all played a part in making sure El Cucuy and The Eagle never shared the Octagon.
With Numagomedov now retired from the sport (and the UFC finally believing that fact), it seems any chance that these two face each other in the future is lost forever. However, that hasn’t stopped either man needling the other whenever they get the urge.
Recently Ferguson, who is preparing for a fight with Beneil Dariush, took to Twitter to swipe at his longtime rival. Using a video of one of their many face-offs over the years Ferguson tweeted ‘You’ll see me soon enough buddy’. ‘conditioning sucks’ and ‘keep running fathead.’
You have a fight soon, your opponent is very tough and most underestimated in lightweight division, focus on him. I wish you and your family best, even though you look like a shit.— khabib nurmagomedov (@TeamKhabib) March 31, 2021
It took Nurmagomedov about four hours to respond.
“You have a fight soon, your opponent is very tough and most underestimated in lightweight division, focus on him,” wrote Numagomedov. “I wish you and your family best, even though you look like a shit.”
Nrumagomedov’s response was met with a number of Twitter users scoring the spat 10-8 in favour of the Dagestani.
Ferguson is due to face Dariush at UFC 262 on May 15. The former TUF champion is on the first losing streak of his 30-fight career. At UFC 256 in December he lost to UFC lightweight title challenger Charles Oliveira. Before that he was TKO’d by Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 in May, in a fight where Gaethje was filling in for Nurmagomedov.
Prior to those losses Ferguson was on a 12 fight winning streak with victories over Kevin Lee, Edson Barboza, Rafael dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis.
