UFC 267 results and video: Islam Makhachev quickly submits Dan Hooker, Volkov beats Tybura

On the UFC 267 main card, Islam Makhachev submitted Dan Hooker with a Kimura, and Alexander Volkov won a unanimous nod over Marcin Tybura.

The UFC 267 main card chugs right along with ranked matchups in the promotion’s lightweight and heavyweight divisions. The UFC’s #5 rated 155-pounder, Islam Makhachev, made quick work of the #6 rated, Dan Hooker, by submitting him with a Kimura. This was his most impressive showing today, and in his post-fight interview the 9-0 Islam called for a shot at the title. Will he get it?

Before that, the UFC’s #5 ranked heavyweight, Alexander Volkov, stuffed a boat load of takedowns to win a decision over the #8 ranked, Marcin Tybura. Volkov seemed well prepared, and even came alive late with his striking. This puts Alexander back in the column, but breaks up a five-fight winning streak for Tybura.

Main card:

Islam Makhachev def. Dan Hooker by submission (Kimura) at 2:25 of round 1: Lightweight

Makhachev set up his initial takedown to get this fight going, and was able to plant Hooker on his back. Before you knew it, Islam was attacking with a Kimura. Hooker tried to fight it off, but as soon as Makhachev stepped over the head, it was a wrap!

Alexander Volkov def. Marcin Tybura by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28): Heavyweight

The big men started swinging right away, trading in the pocket and going toe-to-toe. Tybura was trying to stay in Volkov’s face toot allow him to use his range weapons. Volkov did well with stuffing the takedown, to the point where Tybura ended up on bottom from failing at a double leg. From the bottom, Tybura held on looking for a standup, but that never happened.

Tybura kept pressuring in the second round, trying his best to stay all the way in. He wasn’t getting the takedowns, but he was keeping Volkov defensive. Marcin was trowing combinations and then would reset and go again. The output of Alexander just wasn’t there. Volkov ;anded some good shots to begin the final round, but Tybura went back to closing the distance. Once Volkov did free himself, he was able to score with some flush punches. The defense of Tybura was evaporating and the Volkov was capitalizing.
