Joanna Jedrzejczyk came up short the last time she stepped foot in the Octagon, but she was part of a classic. Her fight with Weili Zhang was one for the ages and is a front runner for fight of the year in 2020. The former strawweight champion hasn’t mapped out a plan for her return yet, but if you ask American Top Team owner Dan Lambert, she should be fighting for gold next.
As a guest on BJ Penn Radio, Lambert opened up about his best female fighter and made it clear a rematch with Weili is what people are interested in, and Joanna should be fighting for a belt next:
“It was a great fight and everyone wants to see it again. I think the UFC is leaning towards giving Rose the next shot so Joanna will sit back and see what happens. I don’t think a lot makes sense besides fighting for the title.”
When asked for clarification later on, Lambert doubled down and again stated that fighting for a championship is the only path Joanna should take:
“I would be surprised if she fights again other than a title shot. I don’t know another fight that makes sense.”
Jedrzejczyk (16-4, 10-4 UFC) has won just two of her past six fights. All four of her losses were in title fights.
