UFC 249: Ferguson vs. Gaethje main card live results, discussion, play by play

Live, blow-by-blow updates for today’s UFC 249 main card from Jacksonville.

Join us today on Bloody Elbow for live results, discussion, round scoring, and play-by-play as UFC 249 goes down in the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

The main event will be an interim lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje. The co-main is for a belt too, with Henry Cejudo putting up his bantamweight title against former champ Dominick Cruz, who returns after three-year layoff.

This post will cover the first three fights of the main pay-per-view card.

We’ll start on Fight Pass and ESPN+ at approximately 7pm ET with two fights. The card then moves to ESPN at 8pm ET for four more bouts, then onto the main PPV card at 10pm ET. The full lineup and schedule follows. The main card and both title fights will be covered in separate posts.

Francis Ngannou vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik

Round 1 - Ngannou with a jab. Rozenstruik with an inside leg kick. Ngannou swarms with punches and Rozenstruik falls down, out cold! Just like that! Holy crap. That is a scary, scary man.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Calvin Kattar

Round 1 - Body kick from Stephens. Another. He lands a right and brings some pressure. Big combo from Stephens. Inside leg kick. Kattar finally fires back. Inside leg kick again from Stephens. Kattar fires back his own kick. Stephens looks excellent so far. They trade low kicks. Body shot from Stephens. He lands a nice right. Another. They trade low kicks again. Hard right. Kattar fires back with a combo but eats a body shot. Kattar with another nice combo. Hard low kick. From both men. Nice jab from Stephens. Hug right from Kattar! They trade in close. Stephens catches a kick and rips the body. 10-9 Stephens.

Round 2 - Stephens getting after it again right away. Kattar kicks the leg a few times though and forces Stephens to change stances. Stephens rips him with a left. Low kick from Stephens. Kattar with a beautiful combination, and another! He bringing the pressure now so Stephens ties him up and lands an elbow. Stephens with an uppercut. Kattar kicking the front leg again. Body kick from Stephens. Kattar with a huge standing elbow and Stephens is down! He jumps on him and finishes! WOW! Stephens is cut to all hell and he still can’t get up.

Greg Hardy vs. Yorgan De Castro

Round 1 - Low kick from Hardy but he eats a left. De Castro is throwing heat. Hard leg kick from De Castro. Hardy feinting. De Castro just misses with a left hook. The next one connected. Jab from Hardy. Combo from De Castro. Inside leg kick from De Castro. Jabs and leg kick from Hardy. De Castro with his own leg kick. Another. De Castro stumbles Hardy with a right and a leg kick. Inside leg kick from Hardy. Jabs. Leg kick from De Castro. They both land big shots. Front kick from Hardy. The pace has slowed. 10-9 De Castro.

Round 2 - Leg kick from De Castro right away. Hardy with his own. They go back and forth. De Castro charges in with big punches but can’t land. Hardy with a superman punch. They trade kicks. Left over the top for De Castro. Two inside leg kicks from Hardy. Another low kick from De Castro. Hardy with a hard leg kick and a jab. De Castro’s volume has dropped considerably. Low kick from Hardy. Jab. Outside leg kick from Hardy. De Castro didn’t throw a thing for the second half of the round. 10-9 Hardy.

Round 3 - Hardy comes right out with a huge right. De Castro with a left. Outside leg kick from De Castro. Inside leg kick too. Hardy with the clubbing kick. De Castro with the same. It’s just a kicking battle now. Three minutes to go. Hardy with a body shot. De Castro slips on a kick. Hardy is punching him in the leg for some reason. Now kicking the legs. De Castro isn’t even trying to get up. Hardy eventually just lets him up. Hardy with a straight right. Hardy pawing with the left. 30 seconds. De Castro has stopped fighting again, just like last round. Jab from Hardy. Very underwhelming fight. 10-9 and 29-28 Hardy.
