Well, it’s finally here. UFC 249 is going down tonight at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, FL. The event is going on even though the US is grappling with being the epicenter of the worst virus pandemic in living memory. The US has seen over 70,000 deaths and new modelling shows the country could expect over 70,000 more.

The main event of UFC 249 was originally planned to be Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomdeov, but that fight will never happen. Replacing the Dagestani is the American Justin Gaethje. The new main event is for the UFC’s interim lightweight title. No matter what happens, we can expect a thrilling encounter between two men who don’t know how to anything less than sensationally. The winner should face Nurmagomedov next, unless it’s Ferguson since that fight will never happen.

Tonight’s co-main event is for the bantamweight title. It pits champion Henry Cejudo versus challenger and former champion Dominick Cruz. Cruz gets the title shot despite a lengthy lay-off and there being a number of higher ranked bantamweights waiting in the wings.

Filling out the PPV card are heavy bouts between Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Greg Hardy and Yorgan de Castro. There is also a catchweight bout between Jeremy Stephens (who missed the featherweight limit by 4.5 lbs) and Calvin Kattar.

The prelims start at 8PM ET on ESPN. The headlining bout is a welterweight clash between Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis. Also on the card is Aleksei Oleinik vs. Fabricio Werdum (heavyweight), Carla Esparza vs. Michelle Waterson (strawweight) and a banger between Vincente Luque and Niko Price in the welterweight division. That last fight was moved up to the prelims after Jacare Souza tested positive for COVID-19, which scrapped his bout with Uriah Hall.

The early prelims start at 6:30PM ET, they are on ESPN+ in the US (Fight Pass for the rest of the world). That’s headlined by Bryce Mitchell vs. Charles Rosa at featherweight. Opening the show is Ryan Spann match with Sam Alvey at light heavyweight.
