With a lack of clear contenders in the division, a fight between two ranked women’s flyweights could determine the next challenger to Valentina Shevchenko’s title. It looks like Roxanne Moadafferi will fight Lauren Murphy at a Fight Night event in June.
MMA Fighting reported the fight although it is yet to be confirmed by the UFC. The event on June 20th is without a location or venue, but it is likely to take place at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
Modafferi (24-16) fought for the inaugural women’s flyweight title back in 2017, losing a unanimous decision to Nicco Montano. Since then, “The Happy Warrior” has been up and down, going 3-2 in her last five. Modafferi’s last contest against Maycee Barber was one of the biggest wins of her career, handing Barber her first loss by way of a one-sided decision.
Murphy (12-4) appeared on the same season of The Ultimate Fighter as Modafferi being eliminated in the first round by Montano. Murphy has impressed in the UFC since her time on the show, winning three fights at 125 pounds. Her last outing was a split decision victory against Andrea Lee.
The event on June 20th was originally supposed to take place in Saskatoon, Canada but was cancelled due to the coronavirus.
