Welcome to a new week of our BE’s BADDEST Tournament Series to figure out what is the single Greatest MMA Fight Of All Time — that one to watch before the world ends. It’s time to delve into the bottom half of the bracket, with today’s match occurring in the red corner. The region’s #1 seed, Weili Zhang vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk, is going heads up with the #8 ranked, Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis 1.
For today’s matchup, we’ve got a ‘one for the ages’ clash for strawweight gold pitted against an end of an era lightweight title tilt — the former being a razor-thin split decision and the latter being unanimous.
Weili Zhang vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk became an instant classic at UFC 248, March 7th of this year. Top shelf technique was on display for five rounds, with both fighters showing off the heart of a champion. The fight had all the volume, all the momentum swings, and ALL the swelling. Jedrzejczyk was downright unrecognizable afterwards. This banger resulted in Weili taking home a split decision to keep her title, but this one could have just as easily gone the other way.
Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis 1 took place at WEC 53 on December 16, 2010, and was the final fight for the promotion. The WEC was acquired by the UFC, so this was its last event and last matchup for them, and the 155-pound strap was up for grabs. The elite lightweights went back and forth for 25-minutes, with each man having moments but neither able to fully take over. When it was all said and done, Pettis walked away with the unanimous decision and the belt. This is also the fight that gave us one of the most iconic moments in all of MMA that really transcended the sport — the Showtime Kick!
