Who would have thought a fighter could earn so many new fans after telling an opponent to shut up at a media day press conference?
Well, that’s exactly what UFC strawweight champ Weili Zhang (20-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) did yesterday after telling former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk (16-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) to ‘shut up’ — in broken English — at the UFC 248 media day staredowns in Las Vegas.
Check out the video footage below (h/t MMA Fighting), where Zhang stole the show with her epic shutdown.
UFC 248 will mark Zhang’s first official title defense, as the 30-year-old hasn’t fought since her first-round TKO victory over Jessica Andrade at UFC Fight Night 157, which saw the Beijing local finish Andrade to become the first Chinese champion in UFC history.
Jedrzejczyk, who lost the UFC strawweight title to Rose Namajunas back in 2017, is the longest-running 115-pound champion in the promotion’s history and will look to reclaim the title at UFC 248, where she takes on Zhang in the co-main event.
The highly anticipated pay-per-view, which features a headlining middleweight title bout between Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero, takes place this Saturday, March 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
