Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder trilogy targeted for July

Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3 will seemingly happen just five months after their second clash.

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder originally fought in December 2018 to a controversial draw that many felt the “Gypsy King” won. On their second contest just last February, Fury left no doubt and completely dominated Wilder en route to a 7th round knockout finish.

While a lot of fans may not be asking for a trilogy — at least immediately — after that definitive end to their last bout, a rematch clause is in their contracts and Wilder has decided to exercise his right to make it happen.

According to Bob Arum, they already have a target date and venue for the heavyweight trilogy: July 18, 2020, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“Now we will sit down and go through all the details for the fight,” Arum told ESPN, noting that Top Rank would again be dealing with PBC for another joint PPV between ESPN and Fox.

”We realized that date was the favorite of both ESPN and Fox because it comes at a dead time in sports, which is good for the fight,” he said. “It’s after the basketball playoffs, baseball is in the middle of the season and there’s no football. It’s the ideal time. The hotel, MGM Grand, also believes it to be an ideal time.”

Their second bout had an estimated 800-850K PPV buys (in the US) and a $16.7 million gate, making it clearly among the best selling heavyweight boxing events in decades.

If made official, the third bout would happen just five months after. So while it isn’t likely to reach those last figures, given the recency of that one sided affair, it is still going to be a lucrative event, especially for the two heavyweight stars.
