The UFC 247 co-main event just witnessed the company’s flyweight queen, Valentina Shevchenko, stop the challenger, Katlyn Chookagian, with ground strikes in the third round. This was all Shevchenko all the time. She won the standup battle as well as the ground fight. This is Shevchenko’s third straight defense, and is there any flyweight on Earth that can properly test her?
Shevchenko took the center of the Octagon to start the bout, while Chookagian pumped her jab from the outside. Shevchenko started to chop away at the lead leg of her opponent, causing redness around the knee of Chookagian. Then, Shevchenko got herself a takedown, and landed a slicing elbow that opened up Chookagian.
The cutman was unable to stop the bleeding in-between rounds. Shevchenko went to kicking the body to open the second round. Chookagian struggled to mount any offense without getting countered by the champ. Shevchenko landed a spectacular spinning kick right to the face, followed by achieving another takedown. Chookagian did not return to her feet that round.
Chookagian attempted to pull guard early in the third round, but brought her feet back to the floor. Then, Shevchenko got herself a takedown into side control. She started going crazy with strikes and Chookagian couldn’t do anything about it. The referee had no choice but to stop it.
