UFC 247: Jones vs. Reyes prelims live results, discussion, play by play

Live, blow-by-blow updates for today’s UFC 247 preliminary card from Houston.

Join us today on Bloody Elbow for live results, discussion, round scoring, and play-by-play as UFC 247 goes down in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The main event will be a light heavyweight title fight between champ Jon Jones and challenger Dominick Reyes. The co-main is for a belt too, with Valentina Shevchenko putting up her UFC women’s flyweight title against challenger Katlyn Chookagian.

This post will cover the preliminary portion of the card. The featured bout on the prelims will see Trevin Giles taking on ultra late replacement James Krause in a middleweight contest.

We’ll start on Fight Pass and ESPN+ at approximately 6:30pm ET with three fights. The card then moves to ESPN at 8pm ET for four more bouts, then onto the main PPV card at 10pm ET. The full lineup and schedule follows. The main card and main event will be covered in separate posts.

ESPN Card (8pm ET)

James Krause vs. Trevin Giles

(Mookie here filling in for Tim on this fight)

Round 1 - Krause with an early leg kick. Quick 1-2 by Giles. Another leg kick by Krause but a counter right by Giles and a strong jab. Left hand by Giles but an overhand right by Krause, followed by a takedown. Krause somehow gets to the back just as Giles was on his way up. Giles tries to shake him off but fails. Krause going for the rear-naked choke. He drags him to the mat but he loses the choke. James still controlling Giles with the body lock and back control. Giles tries to turn but can’t. The body lock is free but another choke attempt comes from Krause. Giles escapes, tries to get on top but can’t. Now with a body lock again, Krause looks to maintain control but this time Giles turns and winds up on top. They’re back to their feet and Krause eats an elbow. Krause responds with a big knee! Crazy round. 10-9 Krause.

Round 2 - Hard head kick by Giles that Krause only just blocked. Leg kick by Krause. Another leg kick by Krause. Giles just off on an uppercut. Giles throwing bombs but is missing a lot. Good jab and a left hook that might have hurt Krause. Giles swinging for the fences but Krause is calm and ties Trevin up. Left hook and right hand and Krause is stunned. They clinch up again and now they’re separated. Left hook once more for Giles. Left to the body lands for Giles. Takedown by Krause but Giles scrambles and James is still on his back. Giles follows him there and tries to land ground-and-pound. Krause throws up a triangle choke to no effect. Two hard right hands and Krause starts covering up. But here comes Krause with the armbar but Giles escapes and keeps unleashing heavy shots. Krause might be done. Giles takes the back and he goes for a fight-ending choke but the horn sounds! Wow! 10-8 Giles, 19-18 Giles.

Round 3 - Right hand by Krause connects. He sticks out the jab. Leg kick by Krause. These leg kicks and right hands are bothering Giles! Trevin might be just as gassed as James. Another right hand by Krause. Low kick and a right hand by Krause once more. And a knee! Giles is having a difficult time moving. Sweeping left hook by Giles partially lands. Another right by Krause! Giles clips Krause hard and throws an unbelievably sloppy punch that almost got himself off balance. Two minutes to go. Knee to the boy by Krause. Left hand by Giles as Krause retreated. Knee and elbow by Krause. James is going for a takedown but Giles defends. Giles way off on an uppercut. Both men exhausted and giving it their all. Left hook on the exit by Giles. Counter right hand by Giles. Late takedown attempt by Giles and Krause defends, then throws a knee to the body. What a crazy fight. Giles finished it more strongly and landed the heavier shots. 10-9 Giles, 29-27 Giles.

Lauren Murphy vs. Andrea Lee

Round 1 -Lee is pumping the jab, as is Murphy. Murphy looks to have a bloody nose already. Murphy’s mouthpiece comes out, and it’s replaced. Outside leg kick from Lee, and a right over the top. They are going to to toe in the middle. Lee is trying to throw short elbows inside but hasn’t connected yet. Lee ducked into a right. Lee with an uppercut. They clinch and Lee hits a throw. She lands a knee that looks illegal but the ref doesn’t say anything. They battle to the bell. 10-9 Lee.

Round 2 - They are getting down right away. in the center, exchanging strikes. Lee tries to back Murphy into the fence but she circles out. Murphy with a straight right. Murphy looks for a takedown but it was half-hearted at best. Nice combo from Murphy. Front kick from Lee. Head lick from Lee. Lee spins and throws a kick. Nice combo from Lee. Solid left hook on the back foot. Lee tries to clinch but gets pushed off. They battle to the horn. 10-9 Murphy.

Round 3 - Lee lands a short shot and Murphy goes down. Seemed like a slip though. Lee looks for a front choke but Murphy defends. Murphy ends up on top against the cage. Lee kicks a leg out and gets up. That was smooth. The ref resets them with two minutes to go. Murphy with a counter right. Jab. Lee spins again and lands a hard body kick. Knee to the body from Murphy. Lee shoots in but gets stuffed. Murphy with the Thai clinch and she lands some knees. They separate with 25 seconds to go. Lee with a jab. Lee with a head/body combo. 10-9 and 29-28 Lee.

Alex Morono vs. Kalinn Williams

Round 1 - Hard leg kick from Williams. He presses and lands some big shots in a big exchange. Morono is stunned, and he keeps it up! Morono falls against the cage and goes down. Uppercut! It’s all over just like that. This man is scary.

Miles Johns vs. Mario Bautista

Round 1 - Not much going on early. Body shot from Johns. Bautista misses with a home run right. Batista with a jump knee. Johns with a couple of nice jabs. Lots of staring. Not much circling, just staring. Batista misses with two more jump knees. Really not much to report here, bit of a nothing round. 10-9 Johns I guess.

Round 2 - Johns with a combo. He catches Bautista with a left. Johns misses with a right hook. Bautista finally lands that knee and Johns goes down! He leaned in and Bautista smoked him! Fight over!

Journey Newson vs. Domingo Pilarte

Round 1 - Pilarte with a huge head kick right away! He lands a hard right too. Newson fires back. Whoa, Newson drops him with a beautiful right hook! He pounds him out! WOW!

Andre Ewell vs. Jonathan Martinez

Round 1 - They trade inside leg kicks. Martinez with a high body kick. Nice jab from Ewell. Counter left from Ewell. A hard nody shot from Martinez has an effect. He charges in but quickly steps back and lands a leg kick. Ewell fires back with a hard right.Ewell with a step-in body shot. More body work. Martinez responds with a knee. Jab and a body shot from Ewell. Martinez shoots and they clinch. After a lot of nothing, they break. Then engage in a fire fight for the last 15 seconds! Wow! 10-9 Ewell.

Round 2 - Low kick from Ewell. Body work from Martinez. Good knee. Flying knee from Ewell. Head kick from Martinez, but he’s countered by a Ewell left. Ewell digs to the body. Jab from Martinez, and a body kick. Nice left counter from Martinez. He shoots but Ewell with a pretty knee. Leg kick from Martinez. Martinez misses with a head kick. Front kick now. Another body shot from Martinez seems to hurt Ewell. Low kick from Martinez. He wades in with a beauty combo. Jab. Low kick trips Ewell, right after an Ewell counter. Good round. 10-9 Martinez.

Round 3 - Ewell might have an arm injury. Ewells rips a body shot. Ewell slips but no harm there. They trade low kicks. Body kick from Martinez. Ewell with a knee. Martinez is landing low kicks and jabs though. Ewell with a nice left, but Martinez responds with a low kick. Ewell scores to the body. Much slower pace in this round. Outside low kick from Martinez. Nice knee from Martinez. Ewell is on his bike. Hard leg kick from Martinez. They exchange inside. They’re throwing down to the bell! I like it. 10-9 and 29-28 Martinez.

Andre Ewell defeated Jonathan Martinez via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

Austin Lingo vs. Youssef Zalal

Round 1 - Lingo chases Zalal down and lands two short lefts. Zalal responds with a knee. Zalal with a head kick and he scoops a single. Nothing there. Zalal with a couple of solid shots. They clinch and Zalal lands some hard knees to the top of the head. Lingo’s nose is bleeding. Zalal shoots but gets stuffed. Nice jab from Zalal, and a jump knee. Lingo wades in with some strikes, but eats a counter. Nice right from Lingo. Another right. Back to the jab from Zalal. Zalal gets a takedown. 10-9 Zalal.

Round 2 - Lingo presses but gets taken down. Lingo obviously grabs the cage to re-adjust and the ref says a whole lot of nothing. Zalal traps one of Lingo’s arms. It’s out now. Zalal with an elbow over the top. Zalal with a front head lock, he could set up a D’Arce but doesn’t. Now he does, and drops down with it. He gives it up and they roll to his feet. Head kick from Zalal. Zalal gets a body lock takedown. 10-9 Zalal.

Round 3 - Body kick from Zalal. Short knee scores. Inside leg kick from Lingo. Zalal scoops a single and puts Lingo on the mat. Lingo is looking for a guillotine but there’s nothing there. He’s just laying there, more or less. Nice elbow from Zalal. Lingo scoots to his feet. Zalal gets a front head lock and looks for an anaconda. He gives it up. Lingo wades in with a right. Zalal looks for a throw but can’t get it. He scoops a single again, and gets the same takedown again. He tries to roll through with a guillotine. Now a D’Arce. Too late though. 10-9 and an emphatic 30-27 for Zalal.

Youssef Zalal defeated Austin Lingo via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
