Raquel Pennington frustrated by UFC 246 loss to Holly Holm: ‘I wanted to fight not be hugged’

It wasn’t the rematch Raquel Pennington hoped for against Holly Holm at UFC 246.

Raquel Pennington couldn’t help but express her frustration in her UFC 246 loss to Holly Holm this past weekend.

Pennington lost a unanimous decision to Holm in the co-main event of UFC 246, with two judges scoring the fight 30-27 and one 29-28 in favour of “The Preacher’s Daughter.” The two first met back in February 2015 when they were both young in their UFC careers, with Holm winning a split decision on the night.

Releasing a statement on her Instagram account after the loss, Pennington said she wanted more of a fight out of Holm and didn’t want to be “hugged the whole time.”

“Well it was not the fight I wanted after waiting five years,” Pennington wrote. “I wanted to fight not be hugged the whole time but that’s the fight game for you. Regardless I’m always thankful for my team, coaches, fiancée, family, friends, and true fans.”

Someone else who wasn’t impressed by the fight was UFC president Dana White. Talking at the post-fight press conference after the event, White said Pennington has a bad habit of not letting her hands go, and he also wasn’t happy with referee Jason Herzog for not breaking the fight up enough when there was little action in the fight.

“The ref let them clinch for four minutes for three f-cking rounds and they fought for one minute. That was a problem too,” White said. “It was driving me crazy man. If you are not doing damage or advancing your position, you split the fighters up and make them actually fight.”
