It wouldn’t be a UFC fight week without a fight cancellation, and this time a featherweight fight between Grant Dawson and Chas Skelly has been scrapped, with Dawson pulling out of the fight.
On Tuesday, Dawson announced on his Instagram account that he wouldn’t be able to fight at UFC 246 for “circumstances” out of his control. You can read his full statement below.
I’m heartbroken to report I won’t be fighting this weekend at UFC 246 due to circumstances out of my control. I’d like to apologize to everyone who was looking forward to this fight. We are working with the UFC to get my bout rescheduled as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience during this time, and I hope to have fight news very soon.
This also means Skelly has been pulled from the card entirely, as the UFC hopes to reschedule the fight between the two for a later date. Skelly was hoping to extend his winning streak to two at UFC 246 after winning a decision back in September of last year against Jordan Griffin.
Dawson (14-1) was signed to the UFC after impressing on the first season of Dana White’s Contender Series back in 2017. After failing a drug test before his UFC debut, Dawson was released from the UFC, but was later re-signed after not being sanctioned by USADA. The 25-year-old fought twice in 2019, winning a decision against Julian Erosa and submitting Mike Trizano.
UFC 246 takes place this Saturday, January 18th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Conor McGregor will return in the main event to face Donald Cerrone in a welterweight contest.
