John Kavanagh wants Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar before 2019 ends

John Kavanagh names the next opponent he wants for Conor McGregor.

One name that’s floated around for Conor McGregor’s UFC return is former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. “The Answer” has been making his intentions known for a while, and recently called on “The Notorious” to agree and get the fight done.

While there has yet to be an official declaration from McGregor himself, his coach John Kavanagh actually fancies the idea of the possible matchup.

“I think him and Frankie Edgar would be a great fight,” Kavanagh said in an interview with The Mac Life on Monday (transcript by MMA Junkie). “I think it was in the works when Conor was kind of going on that featherweight tear. He’s an ex-world champion, great fighter.

“Yeah, if it was me, I would love to see the Frankie Edgar fight this year, if possible. And then go on another run in 2020.”

Kavanagh credits Edgar’s style as one that cannot be taken lightly. But at the same time, he’s confident with how they will be able to deal with it, having seen something similar in the past.

“Frankie has a style that’s very difficult to deal with,” Kavanagh said. “You’ve got to train very hard for it. But it’s also one we’re somewhat familiar with, even from his first fight with (Marcus]) Brimage. This small, fast guy, quick hands, wrestling.

“But Frankie’s just been in there with everybody, (he’s a) world champion, he’s beaten legends like B.J. Penn, and so on. I just think that’s a great match for the fans. And for me, I’d love to see it.”

McGregor hasn’t fought since UFC 229 nearly a year ago, when he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the fourth round.
