Dana White expects Conor McGregor to return this summer, says Donald Cerrone bout ‘makes sense’

New, comments

Dana White wants to see Conor McGregor return to the Octagon against Donald Cerrone.

Dana White has always been a fan of the proposed fight between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone.

The UFC president said he was interested in the matchup back in January, when McGregor and Cerrone teased of the bout and exchanged compliments on social media.

In fact, McGregor vs. Cerrone almost got the green light until it was reported that the UFC wanted the bout to feature as a co-headlining attraction for an upcoming PPV, which ‘The Notorious’ was less than enthusiastic about, for obvious reasons.

That’s when the hype fizzled out but, after Cerrone’s most recent win against Al Iaquinta at UFC on ESPN+ 9, there appears to be renewed interest in the matchup.

Cerrone, who beat Iaquinta via dominant unanimous decision in the UFC Fight Night 151 main event, called out McGregor in his post-fight interview, calling for a fight in July.

And, speaking to Jim Rome in a recent interview, White said he believes the fight ‘makes sense’, predicting that McGregor will return to the Octagon this summer.

“[McGregor] and I are getting together very soon, within the next week, and we’re going to figure out what’s next for him,” White told the ‘Jim Rome Show’ on Tuesday (h/t Jose Youngs of MMA Fighting). “I see him fighting this summer.

“The Cerrone fight makes sense. There’s a couple different options out there for him. He was talking about the Cerrone fight at one point. I don’t really know but that fight makes sense.”

McGregor last fought at UFC 229, where he was submitted by fierce rival Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event. The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion recently released new sparring footage and is reportedly ‘ready to fight now.

As for Cerrone, the 48-fight MMA veteran surged into the UFC’s top-five lightweight rankings after his big win over ‘Raging’ Al this past Saturday.
