Patricio Freire sought to knock his bitter rival Michael Chandler out to become a simultaneous two-division Bellator champion, and he did just that.
“Pitbull” stopped Chandler just 61 seconds into Saturday’s Bellator 221 main event, meaning he has both the featherweight and lightweight titles. It was a right hand behind the ear that sent Chandler sprawling to the canvas, and it was over shortly thereafter. Was it an early stoppage or the right call? You decide. Whatever the case, Patricio had his hand raised and it’s perhaps the finest night of his illustrious career.
Round 1 - No surprise the fighters did not touch gloves for this grudge match. Both men with their guards high. Freire throws the first flurry but Chandler moves out of the way. Freire catches Chandler on the way in. Freire knocks Chandler down with a counter right hook over the guard. ! Chandler is turtled and Freire takes the back. He starts firing unanswered punches. The referee stops the fight and Chandler immediately stands up. He is protesting the stoppage but Chandler was face down and didn’t block a number of ground-and-pound punches.
