UFC 237 is in-progress, and Laureano Staropoli just defeated long-time UFC veteran Thiago Alves by unanimous decision. Staropoli is now riding a seven-fight winning wave, having won both of his UFC bouts. Opening up the PPV main card, the UFC’s #11 ranked bantamweight Irene Aldana pulled out a third round submission of the #13 ranked Bethe Correia. Aldana was arguably down on the scorecards, but made the most of a botched takedown from Correia to sniff out an armbar. After a rough 0-2 start with the promotion, Aldana has finally gained some traction with three-straight wins in the UFC.

Main card:

Laureano Staropoli def. Thiago Alves by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28): Welterweight

Staropoli gave Alves a ton of looks in the opening round as he leaped in and out with strikes. A few clean strikes snuck in here and there, but there wasn’t a bunch of damage being dealt out. Staropoli knocked over Alves with a right hand in the second round. This resulted in Staropoli with a brief moment of top control. Alves got back to his feet and began pressuring, but couldn’t quite build on anything.

The final round started hot, but then Alves blasted a takedown. It was short-lived however, and the fight quickly returned to its feet. Staropoli ripped to the body several times with sequential hooks. Alves began wearing it a bit on his face, and started shooting for the takedown. Staropoli stayed upright, but Alves got aggressive and started unloading some volume.

Irene Aldana def. Bethe Correia by submission at 3:24 of round 3: (W) Bantamweight

Correia took the center of the cage as Aldana played the outside. Not too much took place. Aldana would land some straight punches as Correia looked to wing her strikes. Come round two, Correia began to tag her opposition as she pressed forward with volume. Correia kept up her aggression into the final round, walking down Aldana with haymakers. Correia shot in for the takedown, but exposed her back. Aldana went for the armbar.
