UFC 236 is in the books, and the two interim title bouts on the card showcased two all-out wars. In the main event, Dustin Poirier edged out featherweight champ Max Holloway to win the interim lightweight title, while Israel Adesanya came from behind to defeat Kelvin Gastelum.
Both title fights had back and forth drama throughout 25 minutes, and all four fighters showed heart, grit, and a boat load of technique. This made Dana White give out the rare instance of sending two fight of the night bonuses for both match ups.
Here’s a quick twitter thread with a brief recap and analysis of the event, that’s fitting for people’s social media era attention spans:
KRYLOV CHOKES OUT OSP— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) April 14, 2019
PROS: Krylov’s striking looked good, but his grappling seemed to improve a bit too. He got back to his feet well, and even got dominant position on the ground before the eventual submission.
CONS: OSP seemed to gas early before really landing any offense.
GRANT SPLIT DECISIONZZZ JOUBAN— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) April 14, 2019
CONS: For two fighters known for action, they both didn’t really do much. Jouban probably could’ve spent all that energy throwing strikes instead of just screaming about the decision after the fight.
ROUNTREE BRUTALIZES ANDERS— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) April 14, 2019
PROS: As Rogan repeated a million times, looks like training in Thailand really evolved Rountree’s striking.
CONS: Anders is tough, but his corner should’ve stopped this in the 2nd and protected him from more unnecessary damage https://t.co/wnup3XS7JI
ADESANYA WINS WAR (AND BELT*) WITH GASTELUM— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) April 14, 2019
PROS: WOOOOOOOOW. That was such a great fight. Both fighters went to war, showed heart, and it was a dramatic contest literally until the final bell.
CONS: Not really the worst thing tonight, but... https://t.co/oK6MPkb3sR
POIRIER OUTLASTS HOLLOWAY— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) April 14, 2019
PROS: Poirier's power vs Holloway’s pace and volume. This fight had everything. Heart, technique, back & forth drama, and lots of blood
CONS: It could’ve gone either way, but I don’t know how judges ended up with their scores https://t.co/rUHe2MKXzj
#UFC236 OVERALL:— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) April 14, 2019
PROS: This card deserves two FOTN bonuses, after two wild title* fights
CONS: Few weird ref/corner decisions, a couple of dull fights. Rich Franklin was a good choice, but I have a general issue with UFC's other HOF inductions/policies https://t.co/xE1pXZZ81B
