Former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos is not a man to turn down difficult challenges. Not only has ‘Cigano’ been a perennial contender in his division for the past decade, but the 35-year-old recently revealed to Combate he would gladly welcome the light heavyweight title holder, Jon Jones, to a debut bout at his weight class.
According to Cigano, being the first man to take on Jones in a heavyweight bout would not only be a privilege, but the Brazilian also feels like he could overcome the challenge, if given the opportunity.
“Jon Jones? For me, it would be a privilege to welcome him to the heavyweight division. My goal in this company is very clear to me, it’s to keep on competing and competing against the best. I know I’m capable of this. I’m capable of beating them all. If I have the opportunity, I will beat them all.”
But Jones is not the only champion Cigano has on his mind as of lately. In the same interview, JDS also expressed a desire to take on current heavyweight champion and former light heavyweight title holder Daniel Cormier, now that the Brazilian learned ‘DC’ might not retire in the near future anymore.
“I don’t know. It seems he (Cormier) gave up on his retirement as far as I know. I don’t know how that’s going. No matter what, even though he wants to make money, I think it’s stupidly wrong for him to fight Brock Lesnar. Brock Lesnar hasn’t been active and on the level to be fighting for the belt. This, really, is a demoralization of our sport. If the fight happens, it’ll be just another proof of that. Let’s see what happens to Daniel Cormier, but I’d like it if he could stay a little longer, because I would like to fight him, too. No doubt about it, he’s a man who conquered admirable things, it would be a pleasure to fight him.”
Junior dos Santos is expected to take on Derrick Lewis at UFC Fight Night 146’s headliner, on March 9, in Wichita, Kansas. In his last two bouts, JDS defeated Tai Tuivasa and Blagoy Ivanov. The Brazilian hasn’t lost since a TKO loss to then champion Stipe Miocic, in May 2017.
