Aljamain Sterling wants to stay busy, calls for Marlon Moraes rematch

Aljamain Sterling seems to think the bantamweight division will be on hold because of a T.J. Dillashaw vs. Henry Cejudo rematch, so he wants a second fight against Marlon Moraes in the meantime.

Aljamain Sterling is hoping to get another crack at Marlon Moraes.

“Funk Master” called out the UFC bantamweight contender in a tweet on Monday. Sterling said if a rematch between Henry Cejudo and T.J. Dillashaw happens, neither Moraes nor himself would get a title shot until the end of the year. Wanting to stay busy, Sterling suggested they run back their fight while Cejudo and Dillashaw do the same.

“Since T.J. Dillashaw is gonna be all tied up again at 125 lbs or 135 lbs with Henry Cejudo, why don’t we run it back?” Sterling asked Moraes. “They might not fight until [International Fight Week] in July. November/December is a looooong time to wait to fight again.”

Sterling lost to Moraes via highlight-reel knockout in December 2017, but since then has picked up three straight wins. Most recently, the 29-year-old defeated Jimmie Rivera in the biggest win of his career.

Dillashaw, the bantamweight champion, will seemingly most likely rematch Cejudo at 135 pounds, though nothing — including the pairing — is official. Cejudo, the flyweight champ, defended his title against Dillashaw in their first fight earlier this year, knocking out the heavier titleholder in under a minute. After the fight, Dillashaw called for a rematch at flyweight, while Cejudo wants the rematch to take place at bantamweight, where he could become a two-division champion.

Moraes earned a bantamweight title shot with a recent submission win over Raphael Assuncao, but Dillashaw vs. Moraes has yet to be scheduled. It’s still unclear whether Dillashaw vs. Cejudo 2 or Dillashaw vs. Moraes will be the next bantamweight title fight, but Sterling seems to think it will be the former.
