Kamaru Usman wrestled his way to a one-sided unanimous decision victory (50-44, 50-44, 50-45) over Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 235.
What was the high point of the fight?
Usman pushed the pace on Woodley early on and secured the first takedown of the fight less than a minute into the first round. In the second round, Usman landed a big elbow then slammed Woodley to the canvas, and proceeded to fire off ground and pound from full mount.
Despite his corner telling him to move forward, Woodley remained on the backfoot and Usman worked the body well whilst he backed up ‘T-Wood’ against the fence. Towards the end of the fourth round both men begun to brawl on the feet, with Usman hurting Woodley but failing to finish him in the closing stages.
Where do these two go from here?
The loss against Usman is Woodley’s first in close to five years. Woodley will definitely not get a rematch with Usman due to top contenders at welterweight being more worthy of the next shot, so a fight with either Rafael dos Anjos or a rematch with Robbie Lawler are good fights to make for Woodley.
Like we hear after every one of Usman’s fights, his performance in this outing was the most dominant display so far in his UFC career. The win over Woodley extends Usman’s unbeaten streak in the UFC to ten, and his first title defense will be against bitter rival and former interim champ, Colby Covington.
