The UFC London co-main event just witnessed the company’s #10 ranked welterweight Leon Edwards pick up a split decision over the #13 Gunnar Nelson. Edwards is now on a seven-fight winning streak, and is steadily climbing his way up that 170-pound ladder.
Nelson came out and looked to clinch up right away. He was able to get his opponent down, but wasn’t able to do anything with it. Edwards switched things up and took Nelson to the ground where he racked up all sorts of control time. Nelson made it back to his just before the end of the round, but couldn’t do anything before time expired.
The second round saw Nelson looking to punch his way into the clinch where he searched for takedowns. Edwards was well prepared and refused to be controlled. The highlight moment of the fight was when Edwards dropped Nelson with an elbow and followed up with brutal ground strikes. Nelson hung tough and escaped the round with a major hematoma around his eye.
The final round saw Nelson press forward looking for the takedown. When the takedown finally did present itself, Nelson took full advantage. He moved into full mount and began to land a barrage of right hands. Edwards did a sound job of holding on so that Nelson couldn’t quite posture up, allowing him to make it out of the round.
