Sergey Kovalev (33-3-1, 28 KOs) took back the WBO light heavyweight title from Eleider Alvarez (24-1, 12 KOs) with a clear-cut, impressive unanimous decision win at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Kovalev outboxed and outworked Alvarez throughout the fight, with a persistent jab and swift combinations befuddling Eleider, whose quest for a second knockout win in as many outings against Kovalev proved futile. Kovalev had his hand raised once the scorecards were read, and the belt was put around his waist once more.
Official result: Sergey Kovalev (33-3-1, 28 KOs) def. Eleider Alvarez (24-1, 12 KOs) by unanimous decision (116-112, 116-112, 120-108)
This win means three of the four major light heavyweight boxing champions are Russian: Kovalev (WBO), Dmitry Bivol (WBA), and Artur Beterbiev (IBF). The WBC champion, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, is Ukrainian but speaks Russian. That’s regional dominance for you, and Kovalev is interested in unifying with the likes of Bivol and Beterbiev next.
