Negotiations were underway for a mega-fight between UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and MMA legend Georges St-Pierre, but the bout fell through for undisclosed reasons.

According to St-Pierre, who announced his retirement from mixed martial arts competition at a press conference in Montreal earlier today, the fight just ‘didn’t happen.’

‘Rush’ wished Nurmagomedov the best of luck and credited the undefeated champion as ‘the best fighter right now.’

“It takes three people to make a fight. The two fighters and the organization,” St-Pierre said earlier today, after announcing his retirement from MMA. “It just didn’t happen. I wish Khabib the best of luck. I’m a big fan and I think he’s the best fighter right now.”

In a last-ditch effort to change his mind, Nurmagomedov pleaded with GSP to reconsider and accept a catchweight bout, but St-Pierre’s decision is final. He is officially retiring from the Octagon.

St-Pierre retires as a former two-weight world champion and one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all-time. UFC president Dana White hailed the fan favorite as the biggest Canadian star in MMA.
