We’re halfway through the Top Rank Boxing: Alvarez vs. Kovalev 2 quadrupleheader, and fans at The Star in Frisco, TX have been treated to a couple of title fight knockouts.
Ghana’s Richard Commey (28-2, 25 KOs) became the IBF lightweight champion with a sensational performance against Isa Chaniev (13-2, 6 KOs), utterly demolishing him in two rounds. Meanwhile, WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez (25-0, 20 KOs) shook off the ring rust after being out of action for nearly a year due to a broken jaw, and he floored overmatched Italian Carmine Tommasone (19-1, 5 KOs) four times on his way to a seventh-round stoppage.
Here’s a quick recap of both fights, along with highlights.
Richard Commey def. Isa Chaniev by TKO, :39 of round 2 - Lightweights
Commey and Chaniev wasted no time getting into heavy exchanges, but in hindsight that was a bad idea by the Russian, because he was way out of his league in terms of power. Having previously been shaken up by left hooks a couple of times prior, a wonderful right cross by Commey laid Chaniev out late in round one. Chaniev was on wobbly legs when he got up, and it should’ve been over right there, but Laurence Cole is a terrible referee, so Chaniev fought on.
Round two saw Commey plant Chaniev with a left hook, then demolish him with more punches shortly thereafter for the third and final knockdown. The win makes Commey the IBF champion, and he’ll be facing Vasyl Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs) on April 12th in Los Angeles, Cailfornia. That’ll be a banger!
Oscar Valdez def. Carmine Tommasone by KO, :09 of round 7 - Featherweights
This was a glorified tune-up fight for Valdez given the layoff and the numerous wars he’d been in. It played out as a really one-sided fight. Valdez took his time and was composed over the first few rounds, then he scored the first of four knockdowns with a counter right hand in the fourth round. A sweeping body shot put Tommasone down on a knee momentarily in the same round.
Two rounds later, Valdez sent Tommasone to the canvas for a third time on a jab. The corner had contemplated throwing in the towel but chose not to do so. Tommasone was melted with an uppercut to start round seven, and that’s all she wrote. It wasn’t all bad for Tommasone, as he proposed to his girlfriend and she said yes.
