Gervonta Davis headlined Showtime Championship Boxing tonight against Hugo Ruiz. The fight was meant to be a showcase for Davis, and the young fighter delivered in a big way, knocking out Ruiz in just one round. Take a look at the end of the fight right here:
Davis came out strong in the fight, bringing the fight to Ruiz from the very beginning. He bloodied Ruiz up, possibly breaking his nose and trapping him in the corner. After a barrage in the corner culminating in a right hook, a clearly shaken and badly damaged Ruiz took a knee. He regained his feet to beat the count, but did not indicate he wanted to continue, and the referee wisely waved it off. The official time of the stoppage was 2:59 in round 1.
Davis was originally scheduled to face Abner Mares here, but an eye injury forced Mares out and Ruiz stepped in on less than two weeks’ notice. Ruiz had just recently competed and won on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Adrien Broner card. With that loss, his record drops to 39-5. Davis extends his record to 21-0 with 20 KOs. He also claims the WBA “Super” world title at Super Featherweight (130 pounds).
Great performance from Tank Davis. In a fight like this, his job is not just to win, but to win big and make a clear statement. He clearly did just that.
