The Japanese manga series Kengan Ashura has had two seasons on Netflix, and a growing fanbase is asking for more.
The show follows the exploits of Tokita Ohma, a fighter in an underground ring that has existed since the Edo period in Japan. Wealthy men hire fighters in a winner-take-all contest, known as the Kengan matches.
The story begins when an older businessman, Kazuo Yamashita, has a fateful run in with the young Tokita Ohma. Yamashita witnesses Ohma best members of the Yakuza in a street fight. His company, the Nogi group, subsequently hires Ohma to be its gladiator in the Kengan fights.
Although the fights are unarmed, the series is unquestionably violent, featuring arteries ripped open, broken bones, and vicious throat punches. The series offers a complicated and sophisticated plot, with a large cast of characters possessing secret agendas and motives, including the hero.
The original series was written by Yabako Sandrovich with illustrations by Daromeon and published on the website Ura Sunday and in the MANGAOne app beginning in 2012, with the final installment arriving in 2018. A sequel, Kengan Omega, set two years later, was released in January of 2019.
Netflix debuted the anime adaptation in the summer of 2019, with the second season released in the fall. While Netflix has not announced a third season of Kengan Ashura the MMA drama has a dedicated and enthusiastic following. Fans point to the abundance of source material, with the original manga lasting six years.
