Former light heavyweight boxing champion Sergey Kovalev has found himself at the center of a very serious situation regarding the alleged assault of a female in June. TMZ Sports reports that Kovalev was arrested in the summer following an an alleged incident where Kovalev inflicted “major injuries” from striking a woman at a party in Big Bear, CA.

He has since appeared in court, facing a charge of assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury, which is punishable by up to four years in prison. Kovalev pleaded not guilty to the charges, and is scheduled to make another court appearance in March.

Here’s what the article stated in terms of the alleged incident:

“The woman is claiming Kovalev had hit on her at a party earlier in the evening but rejected his advances. She claims Sergey and a friend followed her back to her cabin and that’s where the alleged attack occurred.

We’re told the woman claims she suffered major injuries including a severely broken nose, a concussion and a displaced disk in her neck.”

The 35-year-old Kovalev (32-3, 28 KO) lost two straight bouts to Andre Ward in 2016 and 2017, and was most recently upset by Eleider Alvarez, who stopped him in the seventh round of their August bout - two months after Kovalev was arrested and charged.

He is scheduled to meet Alvarez in a rematch on February 2nd in Texas.
