The infamous bus attack from Conor McGregor was the central theme during the recent pre-fight press conference for UFC 229. As they’re promoting the lightweight title bout, the unfortunate event was brought up numerous times by both Khabib Nurmagomedov and McGregor during the media event.
When McGregor made his usual prediction for the contest, he also called Khabib a “glass-jawed bum” and vowed to shatter it like he did on the bus.
“I believe, one [round]. He has a glass jaw,” McGregor said (transcribed by MMA Fighting). “The Chechens, my Chechen friends, the soldiers, they told me that they had chicken jaws in Dagestan — and I believe them, because I know a glass jaw when I see one, and I’ve seen this man wobble many times. I’ve seen his brother sparked unconscious in another promotion. I know he is afraid of a smack, and if you’re afraid of a smack off me, a smack will feel like a double-barrel shotgun. So, I believe inside the first, but I have been wrong before. I will be prepared for five rounds. You’re looking at a fighting veteran. I’ve come through it all, I’ve been through it all. I’ve been on both sides of the world.
“I’ve been on the boxing side and I’ve been on this side. I’m ready for any occurrence, but this man is a glass-jawed bum, and I’m going to shatter him — like that [bus] glass was shattered, may God have mercy on its soul — on October 6th.”
McGregor also said Khabib somehow “caused” the incident by hiding behind women.
“The first thing when I showed up at that bus, I showed him my hands, let him know that I come here unarmed, no weapons,” McGregor said, explaining that Khabib should’ve gone out of the vehicle where he and several of his friends were waiting. “He done f—king nothing. He sat and took a shit on that bus. He had to cower behind f—king women and caused what happened to happen.”
An incident that got him in trouble with the law may not be the classiest way to promote the card, and neither is blaming his own actions on others. But when even Dana White says that the bus attack is part of the “story line,” it looks like we can expect this to continue on during the build up.
McGregor avoided jail time for the incident and was only tasked with community service and anger management evaluation. This paved the way for the UFC 229 title bout to be officially booked.
