Invicta FC 31: Jandiroba vs Morandin preview, weigh-in results and video

Kansas City gets another dose of women’s MMA. This card has it all.

Invicta brings an end to the summer combat festivities with a well-booked event from back to front. There are a few familiar faces on this one, with interesting dynamics and very good style contrasts as well. The major focus however, is on lesser-known action fighters.

As we’ve seen in the past, that formula pays off for Invicta. It introduces newer fighters, but doesn’t take it easy on anyone. This allows for building divisions and baptisms by fire, but tends to deliver with in-cage product that’s consistently entertaining as well.

Strawweight champion Virna Jandiroba (13-0) brings her aggressive BJJ top game and hard-nosed approach to take on fellow Brazilian Janaisa Morandin (10-1). Morandin may not have been the most polished fighter when she made her stateside debut, but has refined her game and become a much more patient and intelligent fighter. Jandiroba has worked on her striking, while keeping a consistent approach to her grappling pressure and submission attempts.

Former UFC fighter Pearl Gonzalez (8-3) is getting a fresh perspective in her career, making the absolute most of her time after her stint in the UFC. Perhaps a turn in Invicta is exactly what she needed, as she’s shown immediate improvements in her last outings against Kali Robbins and Barbara Acioly. Her opponent is the very tough Daiane Firmino (10-2), who has a handful of brutal finishes, and only has losses to Carina Damm and Chute Boxe’s Mayra Bueno.

Lisa Spangler (2-0 pro, 9-1 amateur) comes in to replace the injured Raquel Pa’aluhi against the returning Shanna Young (4-0), who defeated Pam Sorenson on the regional scene in her last fight two years ago. If you’re not familiar with Spangler, she’s tough as nails and a D&D fan. If you’re not familiar with Young, you’ll be surprised to find out how much she’s had to deal with to keep fighting.

Mallory Martin (3-2) is still on a mean streak, and will be in what could reasonably be expected to be a standing shootout with fellow striker, Canadian Ashley Nichols (3-2). Miranda Maverick (3-1) stays busy with another fight, this time against Victoria Leonardo (2-0).

Helen Peralta (2-0 pro, 9-1 amateur) will continue to demonstrate that she’s one of the world’s deadliest chefs when she steps in against Kay Hansen (2-1). Featherweights Holli Salazar (1-0, 2-2 amateur) and Audrey Wolfe (1-0 pro, 3-0 amateur) open up the card live and free on Facebook.
