UFC 227: Dillashaw vs. Garbrandt main card live results, discussion, play by play

Live, blow-by-blow updates for today’s UFC 227 main card from Los Angeles, which is highlighted two title fights.

Join us today on Bloody Elbow for live results, discussion, round scoring, and play-by-play as UFC 227 goes down in Los Angeles.

The main event will see UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw taking on Cody Garbrandt in a rematch of their back-and-forth battle last year that saw Dillashaw take the title away from Garbrandt and Team Alpha Male. The co-main will see UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defend his title against Henry Cejudo, which is a rematch as well.

This post will cover the main PPV card.

The show kicks off on Fight Pass at approximately 6:30pm ET with three fights. The card then moves to FX at 8pm ET for four more bouts, then onto the main PPV card. The full lineup and schedule follows. The preliminary card will be covered in a separate post.

T.J. Dillashaw vs. Cody Garbrandt

Round 1 - They both throw kicks at the same time. Garbrandt with a combo ending with a kick. Nothing lands. Body kick from Dillashaw. Garbrandt misses with a spinning back fist. Body kick from Garbrandt. They both land shots that staggered each other! Dillashaw spins and misses. Cody points at the center. Dillashaw with a leg kick. Dillashaw slips and Cody unloads on him. Dillashaw fires back and drops Garbrandt! He grabs onto TJ’s hand so he can’t do more damage. He’s back up but still wobbly. Garbrandt with a right. Low kick from Dillashaw. Another right hurts Garbrandt again! Another and he’s down again! He’s back up but Dillashaw is all over him! Huge knee! He’s out on his feet! IT’S OVER! TJ DILLASHAW HAS STOPPED CODY GARBRANDT AGAIN!

Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo

Round 1 - Johnson with a low kick. Another. Cejudo was moving and he just rolled his ankle. He’s actually hurt. This is crazy. DJ wasn’t even near him at the time. He’s trying to work it out. Johnson kicks the front leg. Johnson with a left hook. Cejudo moving better now. Johnson with a head kick. Johnson with a winging left hook. That’s not really like him at all. Cejudo swings and misses. Cejudo lands a glancing body kick. Another head kick from Johnson. Cejudo grabbed the leg and backed Johnson off, landing a good left. Johnson with a hard leg kick. 10-9 Johnson.

Round 2 - Johnson scoops a single immediately. Cejudo defends well and they clinch briefly. Johnson kicks the inside of the leg and it seems to buckle a bit, though none of the announcers mention it. Cejudo lands a left. Johnson kicking again. Cejudo tries to get a body lock but Johnson gets away. Cejudo lands a left. DJ misses with a head kick. Johnson kicks the inside and outside of the lead leg. Cejuno briefly threatens a takedown. Johnson with a body kick. More kicks. Cejudo with a beautiful inside trip takedown with 1:10 to go. Johnson rolls over. Cejudo lands some knees to the shoulder. 10-9 Johnson.

Round 3 - Cejudo with a body shot. Johnosn chasing him down with punches. They clinch briefly and Cejudo tries to throw him down. He gets a front headlock. Johnson pops his head out and pushed Cejudo to the fence after eating a knee. Cejudo lands another on the break. Johnson goes back to the leg kick. Nice step-in knee and a short left from Mighty Mouse. Cejudo counters the leg kick, then lands one of his own. Another leg kick from Johnson. Another. Cejudo with a left. Cejudo clinches and throws DJ down, but he rolls right through and almost takes Cejudo’s back before they break. Hard body kick from Johnson. Cejudo catches a kick and tries to take Johnson down again, but he rolls through again. 10-9 Johnson.

Round 4 - Johnson lands two leg kicks. Cejudo just misses with a front kick and Johnson cracks him with a counter. Cejudo catches a kick and dumps DJ to the mat. He’s up right away but ate a big shot. He threw right back and cracks Cejudo right back. DJ jumps in with a fast left hook. Inside leg kick from Johnson. Massive body kick. Wow. Cejudo caught a leg and then somehow put Johnson on the mat and kept him there. There’s a full two minutes left. Cejudo isn’t creating much space, and is only landing shots now and again. Enough to keep the position, but the crowd is getting restless. A few lefts there. Elbows to the gut. 10-9 Cejudo.

Round 5 - Johnson misses with a le ft. Johnson with a light inside leg kick. He cubs the outside of the leg. Front kick to the stomach from Cejudo. Not much happening here. Body kick from Johnson. Johnson charges in and runs into Cejudo’s shoulder. They both land in a short exchange. One of the few actual exchanges of the fight. Johnson’s counter left was on point. Another leg kick from Johnson. Cejudo gets a hold of him. He has a body lock from behind. Cejudo with a short right, then goes back to him. DJ is fighting hands. Cejudo lifts him up but DJ stays up. Now he’s holding Cejudo and he lands a knee. Cejuno lands an inside trip! But DJ is up right away! Cejudo lands a good shot. Back to the center with a minute to go in a very close fight. DJ with a head kick, partially blocked. They clinch and battle there. Cejudo with a knee. He lands a left and he’s firing! DJ FIRES BACK! THAT WAS AN AMAZING ENDING! Wow. I’ll go 10-9 and 49-46 Johnson, but those scores don’t do justice to how close it was. I still don’t think Cejudo won three rounds either way though.

Henry Cejudo defeated Demetrious Johnson via split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47)

Cub Swanson vs. Renato Moicano

Round 1 - Swanson land a nice counter left. Moicano using the jab well. They trade kicks. Long kick from from Swanson. Cub kicking the calf. Cub with a reaching right. Good pace early. Beautiful combination from Swanson. Moicano drops Swanson with a hard jab! He tries to get the finish but Swanson gets back up. He charges at Swanson and lands a hard knee. They end up on the ground with Moicano in mount. Swanson pushes him off, but Moicano regains half guard. Now he’s got his back. He’s looking for a palm-to-palm choke, and it may have not been under the chin. But Swanson taps out.

Renato Moicano defeats Cub Swanson via submission (rear naked choke), 4:15 of round 1

Polyana Viana vs. JJ Aldrich

Round 1 - Body kick from Viana. Aldrich trying to clinch. Viana clamps onto her, but can’t throw Aldrich to the ground. The second attempt works, albeit briefly. They separate. Aldrich lands hard. Viana responds with kicks. They clinch again. Aldrich gets a takedown. There wasn’t a lot happening there. 10-9 Aldrich I guess.

Round 2 - Aldrich lands a hard right. They exchange inside and both land. Viana with a right as Aldrich advances. They clinch up. Nothing much happens there. They separate and brawl a bit. Viana with a kick to the body, and a straight right. Aldrich wth a left. Viana with another body kick. Aldrich lands hard again. Viana just takes it. Viana’s best weapon is the body kick so far. She ducks under an Aldrich attack and drags her to the ground. She moves to a high mount to attack an arm but Aldrich squirms out and takes top position. 10-9 Aldrich.

Round 3 - Aldrich lands a hard right immediately. Counter left from Aldrich. Aldrich ties her up so Viana pulls guard. She can’t get anything going from the bottom. Aldrich isn’t doing much on top either, and referee Herb Dean is warning them for inactivity. Aldrich backs out. Viana is tired. 1:25 to go. Aldrich with a counter left again. Aldrich steps in with a 1-2. Viana is punching nothing but air. She can’t judge distance at all. Another hard left from Aldrich. Easy 10-9 and 30-27. That wasn’t a good fight.

JJ Aldrich defeated Polyana Viana via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)

Thiago Santos vs. Kevin Holland

Round 1 - Santos lands hard right away. Holland gets taken down but looks for an omoplata. Now he’s got an arm! Santos pops out and lands six pig punches. Holland takes them. He continues to hunt for subs and lands a couple of punches from the bottom. Santos backs out, then jumps back in with more huge shots. Holland isn’t getting caught with many of them though. Okay, now two do land flush. Holland pushes him off but can’t get up. Santos is just throwing. Now they’re talking. Holland gets up. Santos rips him to the body. Santos wraps him up. 10-9 Santos.

Round 2 - Santos with a body kick. Now a low kick. High kick from Holland on the restart. Santos clowns a bit. Head kick from Santos. Holland starts talking and spits his mouthpiece out. The ref makes him put it back in. Santos gets a takedown against the cage. He moves to mount, but Holland escapes. Santos with leg kicks. Left to the body misses. Santos with another huge body kick. Santos spins but he gets clipped by Holland! He lands a knee. Santos ties him up again. Holland looks for a kimura. Santos tries to go to the floor but Holland keeps a hold of it and gets on top. He lands two big shots. He’s trying to secure a topside guillotine but couldn’t secure it. 10-9 Santos.

Round 3 - Body kick from Santos, but not as much on it. Santos gets a takedown. He lands a couple of punches and goes to mount. The crowd is booing, so he postures up and lands some punches. Holland bucks him off. Santos clubs him with some punches. Holland shot in and he’s in a front choke. Santos gave it up to land hammerfists. Holland tries to roll but just gets mounted again. Just under two minutes to go. He sets up an arm triangle choke. He pops out to side. Holland rolls out to survive. Santos with more punches. Holland is desperately looking for anything but it’s not there. 10-8 and 30-26 Santos.
