Conor McGregor on Jose Aldo’s win at UFC Calgary: I’m so happy for him

After his big win this past weekend over Jeremy Stephens at UFC Calgary, Jose Aldo’s longtime adversary Conor McGregor has revealed he was happy to see the Brazilian pick up the win on the night.

McGregor and Aldo met in arguably the most highly anticipated featherweight fight in UFC history back at UFC 194 in December 2015, when the Irishman ended Aldo’s 10-year unbeaten run in just 13 seconds, snatching his featherweight belt in the process.

Aldo had gone 1-2 in the UFC since that loss to McGregor before his first-round stoppage win against Stephens. Although the Brazilian hasn’t been so fond of McGregor since their fight, the “Notorious” one had nothing but praise for Aldo after his win last weekend.

“I’m so happy for him,” McGregor told TMZ in an interview this week. “To see the joy he had after [the win] … It’s a crazy business and I know he’s gone through a lot of stuff, so to see him come back with that great finish, I was very happy for him and his coach Andre Pederneiras. The whole of Ireland was happy for Jose Aldo that night.” (Transcription by BJ Penn)

McGregor also said a fight between himself and current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is “close” to happening, but is not yet official. The Irishman believes the fight will take place in Las Vegas, which makes either UFC 230 on October 6th, or UFC 232 on December 30th possible dates for the fight.
