UFC on FOX 30 is in the books, and we had a couple of pretty nasty finishes to end the card in Calgary, Canada. During the headliner, Eddie Alvarez lost mount position because of throwing those illegal 12-6 elbows and was TKO’d on the feet shortly after by Dustin Poirier.
In the co-main event, Jose Aldo proved his doubters wrong and landed a brutal liver shot that dropped Jeremy Stephens. Former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk also got back on the win column after beating Tecia Torres.
As always, here’s a quick twitter thread with a brief recap and analysis of the event, that’s fitting for people’s social media era attention spans:
POIRIER TKOs ALVAREZ
— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) July 29, 2018
PROS: A bit controversial, but they promised violence, and we surely got it.
CONS: Rules are rules, and with the illegal elbow, knee and fence grab, Eddie seems to have trouble following them against Poirier. That being said, https://t.co/Qgvg4aVjYy
ALDO TKOs STEPHENS
— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) July 29, 2018
PROS: WOW. Beautiful liver shot. Great moment for one of the all time greats. He also showed that experience and poise after seemingly getting hurt earlier.
CONS: People were too quick to call him over the hill. Don’t doubt Aldo again.https://t.co/WQWuPrSXeF
JOANNA OUTPOINTS TORRES
— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) July 29, 2018
PROS: It wasn’t Joanna Violence, but she’s back on track with a clear cut unanimous decision win.
CONS: Torres found some success letting her hands go, but seemed too focused on futile takedown attempts by the cage. Also, this should’ve been five rounds!
HERNANDEZ BEATS THE CANADIAN GANGSTER
— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) July 29, 2018
PROS: In four months since making his debut, Hernandez has beaten Dariush and OAM. Pretty impressive stuff that vaults him in up rankings that quickly
CONS: It wasn’t the most entertaining bout, but this just shows how deep LW is
UFC CALGARY OVERALL
— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) July 29, 2018
PROS: Vintage Aldo dance & performance, showing he’s still at the top level of the sport. Poirier brought some violence. JJ is back.
CONS: Eddie's corner having to scream at the cutman to enter the cage & treat his cuts. Some quick stand ups. Nothing too big
