The UFC on FOX 30 co-main event just witnessed Jose Aldo stopping Jeremy Stephens in the first round, giving him his first win since defeating Frankie Edgar in 2016, and only the third finish of his UFC career. For Stephens, it’s an end to his three-fight winning streak.
Stephens looked to land the big shots early as Aldo looked to counter. The bombs started to get through for Stephens, but Aldo remained composed and kept throwing back. Aldo started marching forward, backing up Stephens with punches. Just as Stephens started to push back, Aldo ripped a sinister body shot that sent Stephens crumbling to the canvas. Aldo pounced on Aldo, dropping all sorts of ground strikes, prompting the referee to stop the bout. Aldo showed that he can still take a punch and that there is still a bit more left in the tank for his legendary career.
Where will Aldo go from here? Stopping someone like Stephens who doesn’t get finished very often is kind of a big deal and cements Aldo as one of the promotion’s top contenders.
