Video: Gunshots fired, several injured after wild boxing riot in Dominican Republic

Scary scenes broke out in the Dominican Republic following a fight between hometown fighter Carlos Jairo Cruz and Curtis Stevens.

Video taken by Julius Julianis

Former middleweight boxing title challenger Curtis Stevens (30-6, 22 KOs), best known for giving us this priceless facial expression after being dropped by Gennady Golovkin, traveled to the Dominican Republic last weekend to take on local fighter Carlos Jairo Cruz (18-3, 12 KOs). Stevens won by fourth-round stoppage, much to the displeasure of the local fans, and suddenly all hell broke loose.

As you can see and hear in the video below (via JuliusJulianis), fans rioted by invading the ring and charging at both Stevens and veteran referee Steve Smoger, with many hurling plastic chairs throughout the venue. Gunshots were also fired inside the Gimnasio Multiuso Nani Marrero, although no one knows what prompted that incident.

According to Boxing Scene, police arrived and dispersed the crowd using tear gas. Reports have circulated that as many as 15 were injured at the event.

This card was promoted by Cruz y Rodriguez Promotions, co-founded by José Aníbal Cruz, who is the brother of Carlos Jairo Cruz.

Sometimes these things happen in MMA boxing.
