We live in the era of the superfight and, while many fans have criticized the UFC’s matchmaking as of late, reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic is open to the idea of big money fights.
That’s why Miocic, 35, wasted no time in accepting a champ vs. champ title bout with current light heavyweight kingpin Daniel Cormier, who will be moving up in weight to challenge Miocic for the heavyweight strap at UFC 226 this Saturday.
But there’s already talk of Miocic defending his title against the likes of Brock Lesnar after the bout, and it’s been rumored that the WWE superstar will be in attendance at UFC 226 to watch the action unfold between Miocic and Cormier in the main event.
Miocic, who fights out of Independence, Ohio, told Submission Radio that he would have no problem accepting a fight with Lesnar and, in a recent interview with MMA Weekly, the top pound-for-pound talent warmed to the idea of a superfight with Jon Jones, claiming that he’s willing to fight ‘anyone’.
“I’ll fight anyone honestly,” Miocic said. “But right now all I care about is July 7. That’s my main focus. We’ll worry about that after that.’”
Jones, the former light heavyweight champ, had teased at a move up to heavyweight in the past but the 30-year-old is currently suspended for his use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) at UFC 214. The controversial star could be looking at a possible four-year suspension by USADA, after already testing positive for clomiphene and letrozole in his interim title bout with Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 197.
Lesnar, 40, also tested positive for PEDs in 2016 and his win over Mark Hunt was overturned to a No Contest (NC). UFC president Dana White said the former heavyweight champ is ‘very interested’ in returning to the Octagon, teasing of a possible fight with ‘Bones’.
UFC 226: Miocic vs. Cormier takes place this coming Saturday, July 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
