This Saturday, Bellator MMA featherweight champion Patricio Freire is set to defend his title vs. Daniel Weichel, with “Pitbull” seeking a first defense of the title he won back from Daniel Straus in 2016.
While Patricio’s attention is focused on Weichel, he and his brother Patricky Freire have been vocal about wanting Bellator MMA to stage a themed show featuring fighters from the Pitbull Brothers gym and SBG Ireland.
“I believe it’s gonna happen,” Freire told Bloody Elbow. “And the idea is that it happens in Ireland. I want to beat them in their home with Conor McGregor watching everything from the front row.”
Current Pitbull Brothers fighters under Bellator contract are Patricio and Patricky Freire, as well as recent bantamweight title challenger Leandro Higo. Among the SBG Ireland crop are featherweight James Gallagher (who is competing at 135 in his next fight), welterweight Dillon Danis, and welterweight Charlie Ward. Presumably if this idea is given the green light, more fighters from both gyms could be signed and matched accordingly to create a potentially special night of Bellator MMA action.
As for Patricio’s fight against Weichel, it marks a rematch of one of the more dramatic title bouts in Bellator history. When the two clashed back at Bellator 138 in 2015, Weichel had Freire in massive trouble in the opening round, nearly knocking him out as the horn sounded. However, the always dangerous Freire came back and scored a vicious KO just over 30 seconds into the 2nd round to retain his title.
“I was gonna feint a punch and gave up midway,” Pitbull said when looking back on the fight. “He didn’t realize that, but he saw I got closer and had my left hand low. Credit to him for capitalizing on that moment.”
Patricio would lose, then eventually regain his crown vs. Straus, and after more than a year away from the Bellator cage, he’s ready to make it 2-for-2 against the German, who has won four straight since his loss to Pitbull.
While the 31-year-old Freire doesn’t consider the comeback vs. Weichel to be the most satisfying KO of his career, he did say that, “I feel like the one I can label [the most satisfying] is yet to come.”
You can watch Bellator 203: Pitbull vs. Weichel 2 on Paramount Network on July 14th at 8 PM ET/PT.
