If you thought Daniel Cormier was excited after beating Stipe Miocic to become the UFC’s first-ever simultaneous light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, you should have seen his American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) teammates backstage.
Cormier uploaded video footage of Cain Velasquez and friends celebrating his first-round knockout of top pound-for-pound fighter Miocic in the UFC 226 main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday.
And they go wild.
Saturday was a great night, but not just for me at the @americankickboxingacademy we are a family. Here is @officialcainvelasquez , @slikbxr and @iamthebay watching the fight in the locker room. I love my team ! The best gym in the world AKA! Go to @iamthebay YouTube page for bts pic.twitter.com/VoQGohclW0

Cormier credited longtime friend and teammate, Velasquez, for ‘beating’ him up at AKA in preparation for UFC 226. Despite becoming one of only five UFC fighters to win belts in two separate weight classes, ‘DC’ also humbly credited Velasquez for being ‘the best heavyweight the UFC has ever seen’.
After Cormier knocked out Miocic, the former Olympian called out WWE superstar and former heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, who was cageside for the main event. Lesnar took Cormier up on his offer and is expected to challenge the newly-crowned heavyweight king for the title next year.
