On his second attempt Friday afternoon, Yoel Romero missed weight ahead of a planned UFC middleweight title fight against champ Robert Whittaker.

After initially weighing in one pound over the championship limit at 186 pounds, Romero returned to the scales nearly two hours later to re-weigh in. He weighed in the second time at 185.2 pounds — still over the title limit. Championship bouts in the UFC aren’t given a one-pound allowance like non-title fights.

With Romero’s second consecutive weight miss — he was heavy ahead of a scheduled interim title fight against Luke Rockhold this past February — the Whittaker rematch could be up in the air. There are two options as of now: the fight is cancelled because the two fighters and the promotion can’t come to terms, or it goes on as a non-title bout. If the latter is the case, Whittaker would remain champ even in defeat at UFC 225 on Saturday.

At this time, it’s not clear whether Whittaker vs. Romero 2 will take place. will update you on this story as more information becomes available.

What we do know, though, is that there is no chance of Romero becoming UFC champ on Saturday.

UFC 225 is set for United Center in Chicago and also features an interim welterweight title bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington.
