Boxing: Canelo vs Golovkin Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

It took some last-ditch negotiating, but the rematch between Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) and Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) is all set for this fall. As you may know by now, this was due to happen on May 5th, but Canelo’s drug test failure derailed everything, and there was concern over whether the fight would still happen this year. Both parties are satisfied with the final terms of the new financial split, so now the countdown is on for these two to go at it again.

While their first meeting last September ended in a controversial split draw, a majority of the public and pundits believed Golovkin should’ve gotten the nod. Adelaide Byrd’s 118-110 Canelo scorecard was subject to plenty of ridicule, plus accusations of outright corruption. We’re assuming the Nevada Athletic Commission won’t have her on this fight... but it is the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Early betting odds have been released following the announcement of the rematch, and the man from Kazakhstan is the favorite over his Mexican counterpart.

Bovada lists Golovkin at -190, while Canelo can be had at the +155 underdog line. Other bookmakers have “GGG” anywhere between -165 up to -189, while Alvarez’s line is in the +140 to +160 range.

Golovkin opened and closed as the favorite over Alvarez in their first matchup, so the lines aren’t too far off from what we saw last year.

If prop bets excite you, Canelo by decision is currently at +250, while Golovkin is at +203. Want to bet on another draw? That’s being offered at +2000. Also of note, Golovkin is +251 to win by KO or DQ, whereas Canelo is as high as +800.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, September 15th on HBO PPV. Pricing and ticket information should become available shortly. At stake are Golovkin’s WBC and WBO middleweight titles.
