The top of the UFC Atlantic City billing saw the company’s #6 lightweight Kevin Lee win a roller coaster of fight with the #5 Edson Barboza. Lee laid down the law in the opening round, grounding his opponent and smashing him with ground strikes for the bulk of four minutes. The second round saw more of the same, an early takedown and a whole lot of ground and pound from Lee.
Barboza found a moment there in the third round, rocking Lee with a head kick to get himself back in the fight, but Lee returned to his ground and pound ways in the fourth round, as Barboza struggled with his back on the canvas. The final round saw Lee score on the feet with some punches, and after Barboza stuffed a takedown, the referee brought in the doc to check out Barboza’s cut, resulting in the end of the fight. Wow!
Main Event:
Kevin Lee def. Edson Barboza by TKO (Doctor Stoppage) at 2:18 of round 5: Lightweight
It’s no surprise that Barboza opened up the bout with a kick, but Lee was right there to answer with some firepower of his own. Lee secured a takedown within the first minute of the opening round, and quickly transitioned into full mount. All sorts of big bombs were dropped down from Lee, with Barboza having very few answers. Barboza did not make it back to his feet in that round, and went over to his corner quite lumped up.
Barboza opened up the second stanza by shooting a takedown of his own to no avail. Lee responded with a takedown of his own, and then all of the sudden the bout looked just like it did in round one. The onslaught was pretty brutal as the volume of Lee continued to accumulate as Barboza was barely staying in the fight.
Barboza landed a solid body kick to open the third round, and Lee responded with a kick of his own. Lee shot in again, but this time Barboza stuffed it to remain vertical. In a twist of fate, Barboza landed a head kick that had Lee in all sorts of trouble. As hurt as can be, Lee resorted back to his wrestling base and pursued the takedown as if his life depended on it, because it did. Lee made it out of the round, but not before letting Barboza back into it.
Barboza snapped off a few head kicks to open up the fourth frame, but Lee ate them like a boss and picked up another takedown. Just as we saw in the first two rounds, Barboza was stifled by Lee’s top game, and ate all sorts of ground strikes in the process.
Lee landed quite a few punches on the feet in the fifth and final round, bloodying up Barboza even more than he already was. Barboza successfully stuffed Lee’s takedown attempt, but the referee brought in the doctor to take a look at Barboza’s cut, and the fight was called off. What a war!
