Romero, 40, previously fought for the interim middleweight strap at UFC 213, dropping a clear-cut unanimous decision to current champion Robert Whittaker in the main event. Prior to UFC 213, ‘Soldier of God’ had earned a reputation as one of the most feared contenders in the sport, rattling off eight straight wins and beating the likes of Chris Weidman, ‘Jacare’ Souza, and Lyoto Machida. The former Olympian is one of the most explosive fighters on the UFC roster and made a statement with his highlight-reel flying knee KO of Weidman, a former champ, at UFC 205.
His opponent, 33-year-old Rockhold, is the former Strikeforce and UFC 185-pound titleholder and one of the most established fighters in the sport. Rockhold holds wins over Jacare, Weidman, Machida and Michael Bisping. The American Kickboxing Academy standout lost his title to Bisping in a 2016 rematch but rebounded with a stoppage win over David Branch at UFC Fight Night 116, forcing the former two-weight WSOF champ to tap out to strikes in the second round.
UFC 221 will feature the championship tilt between Romero and Rockhold in the main event and is scheduled to take place this Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Perth Arena in Perth, Australia.
