Having just fought UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in the boxing ring, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been teasing a potential move to MMA. Even his father believes that his 41-year-old son will switch combat sports careers.
While some may embrace the circus act that would be Floyd Mayweather: MMA fighter, others simply don’t care what Floyd does next. Among them is former Mayweather foe and current superstar Canelo Alvarez, who spoke to TMZ ahead of his media day session to promote his rematch with Gennady Golovkin.
“With [Mayweather] you never know [what he will do next]. All is possible, but you know what? Whatever he does it doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t interest me,” Canelo said through a translator.
Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) is coming off a controversial draw vs. Golovkin last year, a mere three weeks after the mammoth Mayweather vs. McGregor clash. There was some brief talk about McGregor’s chances against either one of them in the ring, but what of Canelo entering the Octagon? Yeahhhhh that’s not happening.
“On my part, all I can say is I don’t know and will never know,” Canelo said when asked about how he’d do against McGregor in MMA. “I respect boxing. Boxing is my sport, that’s what I love. The other sport is something we’ll never know.”
Canelo vs. Golovkin 2 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena on May 5th, exclusively on HBO PPV.
