Over the weekend in Perth at UFC 221, Yoel Romero finished Luke Rockhold to earn a shot at Robert Whittaker’s middleweight title. However, former 185-pound champion Chris Weidman disagrees with this matchmaking, as he feels he should be getting a shot at the title.
“As far as who should fight Whittaker? I dunno, I think I should,” Weidman said in a UFC 221 post-event interview. “I just beat the top-five ranked Gastelum, he’s never been finished in his career. So I’m coming off a win and Romero’s coming off a loss.”
Watching these developments from the sidelines is another former middleweight champion Michael Bisping. In a recent episode of his Believe You Me podcast, “The Count” hit back at Weidman’s statements, which he found to be absurd.
“You know what’s funny? Chris Weidman, he’s saying that he should get a title shot,” Bisping said (transcript via MMA NYTT). “I think that’s kind of laughable Chris.”
“I don’t want to get into a whole beef with Chris Weidman, but you did get knocked out in three of your last four fights. I don’t think that makes you eligible for a title shot.”
Weidman was on a three-fight skid from December 2015 until April of the past year, losing to Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero, and Gegard Mousasi, respectively. He broke the streak in July by finishing Kelvin Gastelum via third-round submission.
