The World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight semifinals both dazzled, now it’s time for the super-middleweights to shine over the next two weekends. On Saturday, February 17th at the sold out Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, WBA champion George Groves (27-3, 20 KOs) meets Chris Eubank Jr (26-1, 20 KOs) in a blockbuster matchup for British boxing.
Groves finally became a world champion with his TKO of Fedor Chudinov last May, and as the only major champion in the super-middleweight tournament, he was the #1 seed. In his quarterfinal bout against Jamie Cox, Groves stopped his opponent with a body shot in the 4th round.
Eubank Jr is a recent addition to the 168-pound division, having previously fought at middleweight, where current WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders handed him his only professional defeat. The 28-year-old was the last entrant into the tournament by virtue of his unanimous decision win over Arthur Abraham. Eubank Jr sensationally knocked out Avni Yildirim to book his place into the semifinals.
These are two exciting fighters who promise to deliver fireworks when they meet in the ring. The winner of Groves-Eubank Jr will take on the victor of the other semifinal between Callum Smith and Juergen Braehmer, which is set for February 24th in Germany.
ITV Box Office will broadcast Groves vs. Eubank on PPV, but for viewers in the United States, this fight will be streamed live on the World Boxing Super Series Facebook and Youtube pages, so that’s fantastic news in lieu of an actual TV deal.
Bloody Elbow will have full fight coverage of Groves vs. Eubank Jr throughout the week, including betting odds, a full preview, fight night results, and much more.
