The UFC 221 co-main event witnessed the UFC’s #9 heavyweight Curtis Blaydes overcome early adversity to pick up a grinding decision over the #5 ranked veteran Mark Hunt. Hunt found early success with his patented heavy hands, but it was Blaydes who found his stride with top control in the 2nd. The takedown was there again in the 3rd for Blaydes, as Hunt spent the bulk of the round defending and getting rag dolled. After nearly getting knocked out in the 1st round, Blaydes leaned on his wrestling to rally back and take control of the fight.
Co-main Event:
Curtis Blaydes def. Mark Hunt by Unanimous Decision (30-26 x2, 29-27): Heavyweight
The big men had a bit of a feeling out process to open up the UFC 221 co-main event, with Blaydes moving forward and Hunt cautiously looking to counter. Blaydes picked up the 1st takedown he attempted, but Hunt was quick to stand back up. Hunt then did what Hunt does and hurt his opponent with a series of hard right hands. Blaydes was severely rocked but had enough composure to achieve a takedown and maintain control for the remainder of the round.
Hunt stuffed the early takedown attempts from his opponent to begin the 2nd stanza, but Blaydes lured Hunt into an exchange just to switch levels and take top position. Hunt was unable to scramble back to his feet, allowing Blaydes not only rest a bit, but also rack up top control time.
An instant blast double introduced Hunt to the canvas to start the final frame, followed by a thudding body lock slam from Blaydes. Hunt continued to struggle with the top pressure of Blaydes, and when he did finally stand to his feet, Blaydes was right there to sit him back down. Rinse and repeat for Blaydes.
