UFC veteran Clay Guida calls out ‘Edwin’ Barboza for April fight

Fresh off an unexpected TKO win, Clay Guida is targeting a fight with top-5 lightweight Edson Barboza.

Longtime UFC veteran Clay Guida is currently on his first winning streak since 2010-2011, and he has his sights set on a major name in the lightweight division.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Guida called out Edson Barboza, and is seeking to fight him in a couple of months... or at least we think that’s who he meant, because he did have a different name in there.

“Hey Edwin Barboza,” Guida wrote. “You’ll be praying for Mercy when I get my hands on you!!! Are you ready to get slapped in April wimp?!?! Put down the needle, pick up the pen, and sign the contract on your head!!!”

Guida (34-17) last fought in November, scoring a first-round TKO vs. Joe Lauzon at UFC Norfolk. It was Guida’s first stoppage win since 2011, and only the second TKO victory in his entire UFC career, which dates back to 2006. “The Carpenter” also bested Erik Koch last June, marking his return to lightweight after a short stint at featherweight.

Barboza (19-5) was dominated and beaten down by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 219 in December. The lopsided defeat snapped the Brazilian’s three-fight winning streak, which included triumphs over Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez, and a memorable KO of Beneil Dariush.

As unlikely as a Guida-Barboza fight may seem -- rather it be Edson or the fictitious Edwin — it does at least indicate Guida wants to get back into the cage soon. There are three UFC events scheduled for April - UFC 223 on the 7th, followed by UFC on FOX 29 on the 14th, and a newly announced UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City on the 21st.
