Kamaru Usman reveals he was offered to fight Colby Covington in January

Kamaru Usman may have just gotten his wish to settle a personal score with Colby Covington.

After defeating former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos on Friday at the TUF 28 Finale, a lot of doors have opened up for Kamaru Usman. One of them is a possible title shot against current champion Tyron Woodley, which UFC president Dana White himself wants to make.

But according to Usman himself, there has been major developments in terms of his next fight. Speaking with TMZ Sports, the “Nigerian Nightmare” said he was offered to fight Colby Covington in January.

“I’m gonna go out there and knock out Colby Covington. That right now is the fight,” Usman said. “The UFC just called and they offered us that fight. They said Colby Covington in January. And you know what I’m gonna do, of course I’ve accepted. For the fifth time I’ve accepted the fight. Right now, we’re just waiting on him.”

Usman already stated that a fight against Covington fancies him more than a title bout against Woodley as of the moment. For him, not being able to lay a beating on “Chaos” would be a major career disappointment.

“There comes a time in our careers that you get that one guy. That guy that just makes your blood boil. That really pulls the savage out of you,” Usman said.

“I have to touch him. I’ve got to bless this dude with my hands. I gotta bless him. It’ll be a sour taste in my mouth for me to win the belt, defend multiple times and retire, and knowing that I didn’t really put my hands on this dude.”

Woodley also stated recently that the UFC is looking to book him against Covington for either UFC 233 in Anaheim in January, or sometime in March. However, Ariel Helwani reports that Woodley is recovering from hand surgery, so UFC 233 is seemingly off the table for him, and Covington is reportedly leaning towards waiting for Woodley.
