Colby Covington: I would ‘slaughter’ Ben Askren, no commission would approve this fight

New, comments

Colby Covington has more words for UFC newcomer Ben Askren.

Colby Covington continues to build a reputation for himself as a loud talker. One of his primary targets as of late is UFC newcomer Ben Askren.

Assuming that the undefeated Askren wins his debut against Robbie Lawler at UFC 235 in March, a fight against Covington can be made down the line.

“Chaos,” however, is a little doubtful that an athletic commission would sanction this fight.

“Ben Askren, the only thing we have in common...I have a real belt, he has some belts from back in the day that don’t even matter anymore,” Covington said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday (transcript by MMA Mania). “But let’s be honest, no commission would approve this fight. He is not even ranked in the top 100.”

Covington describes a fight against Askren to be a “slaughter” in his favor, and for this, he wants the “Funky” one to work his way up first.

“It would be a slaughter and it wouldn’t be competitive. If that 36-year old virgin builds himself up and becomes a draw, then no problem,” Covington said of Askren.

“I will send him back to the back of the line just like everybody else.”

Based on the standings alone and his win of the interim title last June at UFC 225, Covington is slated to face Tyron Woodley sometime in early 2019. But after Kamaru Usman’s performance at the TUF 28 Finale late last month, UFC president Dana White is considering having him fight for the title, instead.
