Canelo Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KOs) was a heavy favorite against WBA “regular” super-middleweight champion Rocky Fielding (27-2, 15 KOs), and he had little trouble dispatching the Englishman in front of a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Alvarez scored four knockdowns, three of them body shots, and the last body blow marked the end of the fight late in round three.
For Alvarez, it’s expected that he’ll go back to middleweight to defend his WBA and WBC titles. Daniel Jacobs and Demetrius Andrade are the other major titleholders in the division, and there’s also a possible trilogy with Gennady Golovkin that could materialize if “GGG” also signs with DAZN. Fielding at least got a career payday and a Madison Square Garden main event out of his secondary title belt, but he was outclassed and beaten up despite his best efforts. Canelo is slated to return on May 4th, aka Cinco de Mayo weekend.
Round 3 - Straight right backs Fielding up, as Canelo is on the front foot. Uppercut splits the guard of Canelo. Body shot and a right hand to the head by Alvarez. Body shot the other side. And back to the liver. Fielding trying his hardest and he tags Canelo! But Alvarez answers back with an uppercut. Brutal uppercut by Canelo and the umpteenth body shot. Fielding with some jabs. Now Fielding with a right to the body. Quick three-punch combo barely fazes Alvarez. Fielding doing as much as he can. Hard right hand to the head and Fielding is down again. He’s got a half-minute but this surely can’t last much longer. Body shot puts Fielding down to a knee again and that’s a wrap!
Official result - Canelo Alvarez def. Rocky Fielding by TKO at 2:38 of round 3
